About Hugo Dellien

Hugo Dellien is a Bolivian tennis player, born on June 16th, 1993. Hugo turned pro in 2009 and is a right-handed player who uses a two-handed backhand. His coach is the famous Antonio Pastorino, a former professional tennis player. During his career, Dellien broke into the Top 100 in 2018 and achieved career-high No. 72 in 2020, becoming the highest-ranked Bolivian since No. 67 Martinez in 1983.

During the 2011 season, Dellien went on a 117-36 on the ITF Junior Circuit and peaked at No. 2 in junior rankings. Further on, he posted a 21-1 challenger record from April 16th - June 7th, 2018, capturing titles at Sarasota, Savannah and Vicenza. Dellien managed to win his 1st ATP Tour win at 25 en route to 2019 Rio de Janeiro. He won 10 straight qualifying matches before the end of 2019, qualifying at Barcelona, ATP Masters 1000 Madrid, Hamburg, Kitzbuhel and Basel.

Regarding his background, Hugo’s nickname is Pantera, and he began playing tennis at the young age of 5 as part of an after-school program from 2 to 9 PM. He states in an interview that his father Hugo and mother Silvana are his biggest inspirations. As a sports-friendly family, his brothers Iker and Murkel also play tennis. Hugo also says that his 1st coach, Mauricio Solis, has contributed the most to advancing his tennis career. Solis encouraged him to train outside of Bolivia for better opportunities, persuading him to leave his home country. This first led Hugo to move to Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia as a 13-year old and then to Buenos Aires as a 17-year old. His favourite shot is forehand, his preferred surface is clay, while his favourite tournament is Wimbledon. Hugo also says that he idolized Roger Federer while he was growing up.
